This Egyptian Jewelry Designer Has Crafted an Ode to the Sands of the Sahara

With its golden peaks and undulating dunes, it is a wonder visible from space – however, you don’t need to venture quite that far to appreciate the beauty of the Sahara Desert. In fact, one Egyptian jewelry label lets your wear your love for the mysterious landscape on your sleeve (or ears, or neck, for that matter). Jude Benhalim has drawn inspiration from the Sahara for her Fall 2018 collection entitled La Sierra, a majestic line of fluid silhouettes that evoke mountainous terrains.

“This collection is an exploration of the desert landscape, merging the grandeur of nature and beauty of art into luxury statement jewelry,” the Cairo-based designer revealed in a statement. Full of curves and seemingly crafted from molten gold, each piece echoes the movements of sand while remaining architectural and ultra modern. The collection from the eponymous label also features sterling silver pieces for those who prefer a cooler palette, while a selection made with custom resin stones are imbued with an artful, minimalist edge.

Benhalim founded her eponymous brand in 2011 when she was just 17, and has since gone on to release a number of lines that each pay tribute to her heritage. “[My designs are] a young and modern take on traditional Egyptian jewelry, and that is what I think gives my work its uniqueness,” she told Vogue.me last year. “I would describe the aesthetic of my work as being a combination of contemporary art and oriental Arabic craft.”
