“The day we drove out to Ras-Al-Khaimah to shoot the Bouguessa Fall 2017 collection, it was raining nonstop,” says Faiza Bouguessa, founder and creative director of Bouguessa, the Dubai-based contemporary abaya and ready-to-wear label. “But everything worked out; even the gloomy weather worked in our favor by creating this momentous atmosphere for the shoot.”
To know the designer is to know a woman who will remain at her desk until everyone has gone home to ensure that any last details are finished to perfection. I imagine Bouguessa’s private dejection during that rainy two-hour drive from Dubai through the mountains and am buoyed by the thought of her embracing the rain; letting life’s magic settle in and grace her Fall 2017 collection as it was shot against the jagged backdrop.
If Bouguessa currently has more of a romantic, “come what may” approach to life, it is resonating in her clothes. The Fall 2017 collection, made with tweed, houndstooth, wool, and double wool crepe, features details reminiscent of 19th century French dress. Ruffle collars, tie cuffs, and rows of buttons embellish contemporary silhouettes. The designer’s focus is not solely on the accoutrements, however. “For this collection, I let the fabric guide me,” she says. “When I started researching my materials (all sourced in Italy, France, and Turkey), I could tell that the check was perfect for a suit and pants with that long blazer.” The palette – dusty rose, poppy red, and two-tone forest green alongside Bouguessa’s signature neutral hues – offers surefire colors with which to accent your Fall wardrobe.
At her Paris Fashion Week showroom, located just off the sprawling Tuilerie gardens, Farida Khelfa popped in to view the collection. She admired the long, streamlined blazer, its rich fabric beckoning her touch. The Schiaparelli ambassador was introduced to the brand while visiting Dubai to discuss her exceptional career during a conversation with Vogue Arabia at Fashion Forward. The Bouguessa Fall 2017 collection also caught the eye of Moda Operandi where it will be available for pre-order from tomorrow, April 6.
