Coco Chanel’s Rebellious Heart

In the latest chapter of Inside Chanel––an ongoing video series that takes viewers inside the history, vision, and brand code of the Parisian maison––the label celebrates Gabrielle Chanel’s rebellious drive, highlighting the foundation of her eponymous brand. Chapter 18: Gabrielle, A Rebel at Heart is the first part in a tetralogy of films that are set to be released throughout the year, reflecting on the values that governed the life of the iconic designer.

The visually stimulating black and white video highlights three themes: to choose, to desire, and to be. Gabrielle Chanel was known for going against the grain and challenging conventions, and the narrative focuses on the namesake founder’s audacious intuition.

Mademoiselle Chanel’s claim to freedom revolutionized the way women dressed. She changed the course of fashion, freeing women from the confines of a corset by creating the famous little black dress, and designing the quilted 2.55 handbag, which she initially made because the designer sought an alternative to holding her purse (thus adding the famous chain). Once quoted as saying, “I decided who I wanted to be, and that is who I am,” the designer continues to serve as an inspirational figure to this day.

In addition to the film, Karl Lagerfeld dedicated a new handbag silhouette in her honor; the Gabrielle was unveiled amid the Spring 2017 collection and features a double-chain strap and a sturdy base. Lagerfeld tapped the brand’s muses––Kristen Stewart, Caroline de Maigret, Cara Delevingne, and Pharrell Williams––to front the campaign, which will debut on April 3. In addition to the handbag, the maison will launch a new fragrance under the founder’s moniker this fall.
