Since the Gucci Princetown fur-lined slippers, and the Céline leather babouche shoes sprung onto the style circuit, the street-style elite climbed down from their high heels. Flat shoes have been trending on the fashion barometer for a solid 12 months now, and the Spring 2017 collections prove that keeping your footwear down-to-earth is still at the cutting edge of cool.
Never one to labor a good accessory, Phoebe Philo has since manoeuvred the fashion house of Céline away from the babouche, and vested interest in luxe sneakers with flashes of pillar box red – very wearable. Rather than opting for a spiky stiletto paired with its embellished gowns, Valentino styled its Spring 2017 offering with velvet sandals in a moody Bordeaux hue. At New York Fashion Week, Victoria Beckham (who began her foray into the luxury style business religiously wearing YSL Tributes, remember?) sent her models down the runway in chunky premium boots (notably ‘flat’), and natty leather shoes with low gravity. This is how to wear flat shoes in spring 2017. Alas, this is a practical-accessory movement that allows for faster city hopping, and longer days in one versatile outfit. Let’s celebrate.
Vogue Arabia looks to the runways for how-to style tips so that next spring’s penchant for keeping footwear on the low is well versed for summer:
Valentino Spring 2017:
Once upon a time, a statement evening gown required skyscraper-like heels in order to truly deliver its message of elegance. Not so now – according to creative director of Valentino, Pierpaolo Piccioli, women’s eveningwear can be just as high impact with a simple velvet sandal.
Runway Tip: Blend the hues of your accessories and dress to master this look.
Céline Spring 2017:
Philo’s prime customer is the high-powered woman who needs versatility in her wardrobe, but all items must come with in-built edge. Primary colors can be clashed with an integrated approach from accessories. It’s time to invest in some cherry red tights, and a matching tote.
Runway Tip: Midi dresses can be made extra modest with the addition of colored tights, but stick to luxury trainers to lend an urban edge to pristine poplin cotton threads.
Runway Tip: Long flowing layers in featherlight fabrics will keep the look louche.
Victoria Beckham Spring 2017:
Velvet and leather can be good bedfellows, as proved by Victoria Beckham. Bright white slip-on flats prove to be a welcome tonal pop when paired with moody colors.
Runway Tip: Tame a sensual silk dress with stomping boots. Make sure the hemline hits the top of the boots for maximum impact.
