How This Family-Run Brand Is Changing The Jewelry Game

Boghossian is a six generation family-owned business that has been trading, sourcing, and handling precious jewels and gems for centuries. Based in Geneva, the Boghossian family’s roots can be traced back to Armenian gem traders from Mardin, Turkey, who were exchanging jewels as far back as the 1750s. After fleeing the land during the Armenian genocide at the outbreak of the first world war, the family relocated to Aleppo, Syria, in 1919, where Ohannes Boghossian re-established the family business.

Just 30 years later, the brand made a name for itself as the main jeweler in the Middle East under the helm of Ohannes’s eldest son, Robert. Today, the leading jewelry label is looked over by Robert’s son Albert, and Albert’s nephews Ralph and Roberto, who have since expanded the longstanding family-run maison beyond the region, opening up flagships in London, Geneva, Hong Kong, and Gstaad.

The house is known for its innovative craftsmanship, calling on techniques of outstanding mastery to contribute to the art of jewelry, as seen with their boundary-pushing techniques entitled “Inlay” (stones set within other stones) and “Kissing” (two gems “embracing” each other). When the brand launched its Merveilles collection – starring Bella Hadid in the campaign – it implemented a new technique (that took four years to develop) that makes precious gems and stones appear as light as air. Boasting a dazzling lineup of maximalist rings, necklaces, and earrings, each piece features precious stones and diamonds that hold each other together, relying on as minimal amount of metal as possible, completely freeing the stones from their settings.

“Since gold interferes with light reflection, we work hard to find new ways of holding the stones together with minimal intervention from the precious metal,” explains CEO Albert Boghossian. The overall effect? Diamond-dipped jewelry that shines brightly whichever angle you glance at it.

The pièce de résistance of the collection is an eye-popping necklace with a flawless Marquise-cut F diamond, that weighs in at about 7.5 carats. Twenty-two pear-shaped diamonds and rubies cover the entire surface of the necklace on either side. An added bonus? The gleaming design can be worn both ways, thanks to its rotating diamonds.

More recently, the brand launched The Silk Collection, which was inspired by the ancient trade network that connected East and Southeast Asia with East Africa, West Asia, and southern Europe and where silk, goods, and cultures were exchanged. With 11 high jewelry sets that each pay homage to a key city along the intricate network of routes, the jewelry offering made its debut in October on models dressed in Stephane Rolland during a surrealistic dinner held at London’s Banqueting House.
