Hermès Adds the Roulis to Its Roster of Exceptional Leather Bags

Creator of the most haute of haute leather goods, Hermès has truly mastered the art of transforming the material – and it is an art form. The obscure and time-consuming labor that goes into producing such items as a diamond-encrusted crocodile Birkin bag, a bespoke dressage saddle or butter-soft smock dress, has only increased in the years since Thierry Hermès set up his harness workshop in Paris in 1837, and breathed in his first whiff of leather.

“It is by handling the finest leathers – chosen, cut, sewn and polished with expert skill – that six generations have learned and passed on the values that inspire Hermès’ dynamism,” says artistic director Pierre-Alexis Dumas. With the passing of time and the individual input of those six generations, the result is a rather impressive in-house ‘Leather Reserve,’ referred to by the historic label as ‘Ali Baba’s cave.’ Home to some of the most beautiful and rare skins in the world, all prepared, tanned and void of any flaws, the archive provides unlimited inspiration – the material for the next cult classic is just waiting to be chosen.

A big contender for such a title is the Roulis Mini in exotic matte Mississippiensis Alligator or polished Niloticus Crocodile, new to the region, and available in The Dubai Mall boutique. Only one of each style will be sold locally, with features that include one-of-a-kind scales and the ‘Chaîne d’ancre’ jewel clasp – a firm reminder by Hermès to the world of its prowess in bags.

More so than ever before, there is a desire for products – whether fashion or accessories – that have lasting worth, quality, and longevity that extends far beyond the season. Hermès’ artistic director of women’s ready to wear, Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski, summed up the sentiment beautifully when referencing the brand’s quietly luxurious Fall 2020 collection: “What is beautiful must be useful.” Much like the artfully crafted coats from the runway, the new Roulis and the many timeless creations that have gone before, are forever pieces – and there is no price you can put on that.
