It feels like we’re still coming down from this year’s sartorial spectacle, but preparations are already underway for the Met Gala 2019. The annual fashion gathering, held to raise funds for New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, will take place on Monday, May 6, with the next installment’s theme announced this week.
The 2019 extravaganza will take inspiration from Notes on Camp, a seminal essay penned by writer Susan Sontag in 1964. The literary discourse, which helped propel its author to fame, explored the essence of “campness” – “a love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration,” Sontag once explained in Partisan Review. So, we can expect plenty of over-the-top creations, ostentatious accessorizing, and outlandish styling come next May (it’s safe to assume perennial Met Gala favorite Rihanna will nail the event’s theme, yet again). The “Camp: Notes on Fashion” theme will also form the crux of a year-long exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which launches at the gala itself.
“It felt very relevant to the cultural conversation to look at what is often dismissed as empty frivolity but can be actually a very sophisticated and powerful political tool, especially for marginalized cultures,” Andrew Bolton, the curator in charge of the Costume Institute, told the New York Times.
Also announced this week were the event’s four co-chairs for 2019: Lady Gaga, Serena Williams, Harry Styles, and Gucci’s creative director, Alessandro Michele. The quartet, who represent the fashion, music, and sporting industries, will be joined on the night by Vogue US editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who has chaired the Met Gala since 1995. Last year’s Met Gala theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”, co-hosted by Rihanna, Amal Clooney, and Donatella Versace.
