Hâshé’s Spring 2019 Collection Seeks Inspiration From Shirin Neshat

There’s a huge difference between fashion and clothes. That’s the underlying message in Hâshé’s Spring 2019 collection. The new offering, entitled “Transcendence” (defined as the act of surpassing usual limits), makes the argument that one’s sartorial sensibilities are a form of expression and visual art. Fitting then, that UAE-raised Ava Hashemi, the designer behind the Dubai-based ready-to-wear label, decided to draw inspiration from two prominent female artists. New York-based, Iranian visual artist Shirin Neshat and Serbian performance artist Marina Abramović both serve as the muses behind the brand’s latest womenswear range for their ability to express themselves without saying much at all, utilizing their art instead to spread their messages.

This idea manifests into cuffed shirts, ottoman skirts and jumpsuits, and culottes artfully crafted out of clean, rich fabrics like taffeta and jacquard. Navy blue blazers can be styled as a vest by simply unbuttoning the detachable sleeves and pouch pockets, meanwhile, a transitional A-line gown can also be transformed into a midi or maxi dress in a split second. Those looking for bright vivid hues won’t find them here. The pieces in the collection come in a neutral color palette of black, navy, white, and the occasional sprinkle of nude.

The 27-year-old launched her label eight years ago when she was only 19 with a line-up of custom-made clutches. Since then, the brand has expanded to include accessories and ready-to-wear, often showcasing during international fashion weeks including Paris Fashion Week and Fashion Forward Dubai, rapidly cementing her status as a homegrown creative to keep on our radar. Indeed, just like the name of her new collection suggests, the Iranian designer certainly continues to rise above.
