LA-based ready-to-wear label Haney has just settled into its first Middle Eastern stockist at Harvey Nichols, Riyadh, offering up its Spring 2017 collection to Saudi clients. The beachy chic-look maison plans to broaden its offering to the rest of the Gulf region too. Reese Witherspoon, Karolína Kurková, and Jane Fonda, are just a few of the brand’s A-list fans, alongside a roster of private, bespoke customers in the Middle East.
While the brand’s aesthetic is unapologetically sassy, the founding designer Mary Alice Haney explains how key pieces of the collection can be adapted to suit conservative and elegant dress codes with ease. “The key is being able to layer them,” Haney tells Vogue Arabia.
Expect a capsule of muted colors and irregular hemlines accentuated with contrasting fabrics. Sheer sequin hemlines make way for streamlined blush-hued fabric – and then there’s the hero-piece silk jumpsuit. Vogue Arabia asks the Haney founder three quick-fire questions to decode the label’s next-level approach to appeal to the Gulf.
Describe your global customer in three words:
Glamorous, jet-setting, and modern.
Will you be designing exclusive pieces for the Middle Eastern market?
Yes! The Middle Eastern market is such a significant, growing market for us and I love thinking about that customer in the design process. For Resort 2018, I designed the most stunning metallic kaftan. I found the fabric in Paris and it is incredible. Our fabrics are all sourced from Europe, mainly Paris, and quality is key.
What styling tips can you offer for the conservative dresser who wants to wear key pieces from this collection?
Every woman wants to feel glamorous and special, no matter where they live. We had a beautiful sequin slip dress that I styled with a cashmere turtleneck recently and it was a hit. It was one of my favorite looks.
