A champion for women’s and human rights, and equality, model Halima Aden is fast becoming one of the most influential figures in the fashion world. The Somali-American is known for her pioneering efforts in breaking down stereotypes, and now she is using her fashion expertise in a new project with Tommy Hilfiger to create limited-edition T-shirts for charity.
Aden has joined the charitable initiative alongside 23 per, including model, and local creatives such as Dubai-based blogger Haifa Beseisso among the list, where each has designed a garment for American fashion house Tommy Hilfiger. For the project, Aden looked to sustainability by using recycled fabrics and leftover material to custom design the T-shirt for the brand.
The garments are to be auctioned on the online marketplace Catawiki, where all proceeds from the sales will be donated to the WWF Water Stewardship program in China’s Taihu River, the Mekong River basin in Vietnam, and the Büyük Menderes river basin in Turkey. The two-time Vogue Arabia cover star and Diversity Editor-at-Large, Aden took to Instagram to announce her partnership with the brand. “Honored to have custom designed a t-shirt with my friends @tommyhilfiger for a good cause,” she wrote. “Bidding starts today and ends Nov. 1 for this one-of-a-kind #TommyHilfiger piece and all proceeds will be donated to the WWF Water Stewardship program.”
The initiative has been developed in line with Tommy Hilfiger’s global campaign for Fall 2020, which is urging consumers to create fashion that “wastes nothing and welcomes all.” Aden’s 100% organic cotton T-shirt has been designed with blue, red, and white coloring, featuring a bold Tommy Hilfiger label in the center as well as “Waste Nothing & Welcome All” written on the back.
The 23-year-old beauty and Tommy Hilfiger have a strong relationship, with Aden frequently walking the runway for the brand. The model was also part of the pioneering moment for Tommy Hilfiger, fronting the campaign for the brand’s first-ever hijab.
