Hijabi model Halima Aden has walked the runways for some of the industry’s biggest labels, breaking stereotypes along the way. Since being signed by IMG Models in 2016, the Somali-American model has made history on multiple occasions by becoming the first hijab-wearing model to walk on international runways and to star on the cover of Vogue with Vogue Arabia’s June 2017 issue.
Aden first saw her rise to fame after she competed in the Miss Minnesota USA pageant, being the first hijab-wearing woman to do so. She later made her catwalk debut during New York fashion week in the fall 2017 season, when she walked for Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 5 show. In addition to being a force on the runway, Aden has always championed the voices of those who are often unheard and has become a pioneering figure in diversifying the fashion industry to be more inclusive. In 2020, Aden joined the Vogue Arabia team as the Diversity Editor-at-Large, contributing a monthly column to further shine a spotlight on social topics such as race, diversity, and acceptance.
In celebration of her birthday today (September 19), Vogue Arabia has rounded up some of her best moments from the runways.
