Gucci is donating US $500,000 to March For Our Lives, a gun control rally led by students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The event, which is organized by survivors of the devastating mass shooting that claimed 17 lives on February 14, is set to take place in Washington, D.C. next month. The news comes two days after the brand’s surrealist Fall 2018 show during Milan Fashion Week.
“We stand with March for Our Lives and the fearless students across the country who demand that their lives and safety become a priority. We have all been directly or indirectly impacted by these senseless tragedies,” the brand stated in a release. “I am truly moved by the courage of these students,” added Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele. “My love is with them and it will be next to them on March 24. I am standing with March for Our Lives and the strong young women and men across the United States who are fighting for their generation and those to come.”
Last week, George and Amal Clooney donated US $500,000 for the cause and revealed that they would both be participating in the march. “Amal and I are so inspired by the courage and eloquence of these young men and women from Stoneman Douglas High School… Our family will be there on March 24 to stand side by side with this incredible generation of young people from all over the country, and in the name of our children Ella and Alexander, we’re donating $500,000 to help pay for this groundbreaking event. Our children’s lives depend on it,” he said. Their generous donation was matched by Oprah Winfrey, who shortly after donated half a million dollars to the cause. “George and Amal, I couldn’t agree with you more. I am joining forces with you and will match your $500,000 donation to ‘March For Our Lives’,” Winfrey wrote on Twitter. Several other celebrities, including Steven Spielberg have matched the Clooney’s donation.
