Gigi Hadid Stars Alongside Alexander Wang in the Pirelli 2019 Calendar

The 2019 edition of the iconic Pirelli calendar will star only four women: Gigi Hadid, ballerina Misty Copeland, model Laetitia Casta, and actor Julia Garner, alongside Alexander Wang and a few other special guest appearances, the brand has announced. Shot by Scottish photographer Albert Watson over a course of 10 days on location in Miami and New York last April, this year’s edition of the annual calendar is set to tell the fictional story of four women who are either on the road to achieving success or are grappling with the subsequent consequences of success.

The storyline developed by Watson for the part-Palestinian model sees her take on the role of a reclusive superstar seeking refuge in her plush, Manhattan penthouse, with Wang as her trusted companion. The images were photographed at the Carlyle Hotel in New York. Meanwhile, Garner acts as a photographer, who only takes pictures of plants; Casta plays the role of a painter; and Copeland plays a dancer who dreams of fame.

It won’t be Hadid’s first time modeling for the iconic calendar. The 22-year-old model represented the month of November in the 2015 edition of the annual calendar, which was photographed by Steven Meisel. The then-19-year-old told Bloomberg, “It’s different because it’s not fashion, which is kind of interesting. It’s its own realm. That’s why it’s cool.” Hadid explained that her experience with Pirelli wasn’t comparable to other high-profile jobs—like posing for Sports Illustrated or Victoria’s Secret—because “it’s not the cover of a fashion magazine, and it’s not a fashion campaign. And it’s not an editorial, because, frankly, it doesn’t really matter if you’re wearing something from the costume store or you’re wearing something that is high fashion. It’s just making iconic images.”

The 46th edition of the Pirelli calendar is set for release in early December.
