Happy birthday to us! It’s been two years since the launch of the print edition of Vogue Arabia – and we’re celebrating this milestone with Gigi Hadid photographed by Peter Lindbergh for the March 2019 issue. Wearing Giambattista Valli Couture and Givenchy Couture, the editorial was photographed in Paris during Fashion Week. Vogue Arabia editor-in-chief Manuel Arnaut says, “It was, of course, an immense honor when celebrated artist Peter Lindbergh agreed to photograph our second anniversary cover, generously involving all the team in his magical creative process. The cherry on the cake is our cover star, Gigi Hadid. Although the Palestinian-American star is fashion’s most in-demand model, having posed for almost every A-list photographer, it was also her first time working with Lindbergh.”
The shoot is accompanied by an exclusive interview with the 23-year-old, who opens up about her upbringing, family, and life in the public eye. “A lot of people make assumptions about my family, but our childhood wasn’t ‘Hollywood.’ My parents never made their success an excuse for me, I always knew that after high school I was expected to work towards supporting myself, so I never put all my eggs in the modeling basket,” Hadid tells Vogue Arabia.
This marks Hadid’s 37th Vogue cover to date, and her second for Vogue Arabia, after gracing the front page of our launch issue in March 2017, shot by Inez & Vinoodh. “Being Arab has influenced me to be open and loving of all backgrounds, realizing that being more of one thing doesn’t make you less of something else,” she muses proudly, reflecting on the impact her Palestinian heritage has had on her life. Last year, Hadid was photographed celebrating Eid with pop star Zayn Malik, and also marched the streets of New York protesting against US President Donald Trump’s anti-Muslim travel ban in 2017.
When it comes to sibling rivalry, Hadid claims that there isn’t any, insisting that she enjoys sharing her fashion journey with her sister and best friend, Bella Hadid. Even if their schedules clash, “we are together at the end of the night ordering room service and a movie,” she reveals.
Inside the March 2019 anniversary issue’s bumper 368 pages, which weighs in at a whopping 1kg, expect interviews and shoots with the fashion and beauty industry’s biggest players, empowering women, icons of Arabia, and modest fashion trends. Further highlights include the first-ever joint interview with Her Imperial Majesty Empress Farah Pahlavi of Iran and her eldest grandchild, Her Highness Princess Noor Pahlavi; director of the Sharjah Art Foundation, Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi; a candid discussion with Alexander McQueen’s elusive creative director Sarah Burton; five rising stars of Arab cinema set to make a major impact; and the young Arab designers everyone needs in their wardrobe.
Reflecting on the issue, Arnaut adds, “This month, we had the chance to profile some of the most inspirational women in the region, while also supporting a strong group of Arab designers, honoring our ongoing commitment towards the project #buyarabdesigners. We are extremely proud of it.”
Don’t forget to pick up your copy of the anniversary issue when it hits shelves on March 1.
