’70s Getaway Glamour for Spring at Bedouin

Andraya Farrag, founding designer of Bedouin, sought inspiration for her brand’s latest campaign in an unexpected place. For Spring 2018, the collection has multiple motifs pointing to ’70s getaway glamour. At a cursory scan, it reviews like a capsule wardrobe of a well-travelled It girl. Tropical leaves and classic stripes make way for beetle and butterfly prints photographed in a house that oozes ‘balmy midday in Havana’. Farrag looked to the photographs of actress Margaux Hemingway by David Hume Kennerly shot circa 1978. The original shoot took place in her grandfather, Ernest Hemingway’s Cuban holiday home.

The house is located outside of Havana in Finca Vigia and eternally captured by Kennerly, hints of the writer’s sanctuary dotted about. The sustainable fashion collection evokes the spirit of the ’70s and is therefore aptly titled ‘Lost in Havana’. “More than a straight-up Cuban-inspired collection, this season is a reflection of the life that Margaux led while in Havana. Where she might be standing in front of the cameras in this now quite iconic ’70s shoot, for all the world to see, the images actually tell a different narrative; of someone who is quite possibly lost, and completely exposed, yet also quietly powerful,” Farrag tells Vogue.me. “That’s what this collection speaks volumes about, a strong feminine woman, who’s not afraid to show vulnerability but can also take on the world,” Farrag adds.

As the maison moves into its fourth year on the market, after it was founded in 2014 by the Central Saint Martins grad, we see an increasing confidence to pick and choose inspiration but not be hemmed in by a theme. Hence the bold clashes of chevron stitches amid leopard print two-pieces alongside metallic finishes. The retro undercurrent draws it all together with a gentle cohesion.
