In the world of fashion there is no night bigger than the Met Gala, and nothing that is loved more than getting behind the scenes of creating this extravaganza on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In an exclusive with Vogue Arabia, the late Karl Lagerfeld’s eponymous brand shares the sketches for actress and supermodel Amber Valletta’s Met Gala 2023 couture gown, a tribute to the legendary designer who has perhaps influenced fashion more than anyone else.
For Valletta, this year’s theme, ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty’, was personal as she not only holds the designer in great regard, but also viewed him as a dear friend. Having released collaborative collections with the brand in the past and acting as their sustainability ambassador, it’s no surprise that the 49-year-old chose to pay homage to Lagerfeld in his namesake label.
Created in consultation with Valletta by Hun Kim, Design Director at Karl Lagerfeld, the stunning gown was inspired by one of Lagerfeld’s favorite accessories. “Amber’s look is inspired by the fan accessory that Karl was known to always carry with him in the ‘80s and ‘90s,” explains Hun Kim, Design Director, Karl Lagerfeld. “The sunburst-style design is crafted from pleated white mesh, with black beaded over-pleats. We added a detachable, pleated silk-satin cape to add to the goddess-like effect.”
The body of the gown features an elegant fan-shaped top and skirt, with deep cut-outs on the waist for a more feminine silhouette. The sunburst-style design is crafted from pleated white mesh, with black beaded over-pleats. A detachable, pleated silk-satin cape that Valletta was not shy to show off on the red carpet adds to the goddess-like effect. Her look was completed jewelry by Brilliant Earth, while her makeup was left simple and elegant.
