Last season, for Chanel’s Fall 2018 runway presentation, Karl Lagerfeld conjured up a forest. Before that, the French house built a waterfall. For Monday’s Spring 2019 collection, in keeping with the maison’s penchant for the spectacle, Karl Lagerfeld invited press, celebrities, and industry insiders to his fairytale version of the sea. Read on for the main highlights from the beach-inspired show below.
Karl Lagerfeld transformed Paris’s Le Grand Palais into an actual beach equipped with sand, turf, lapping waves, a coastal backdrop, on-duty life guards (characterized by male models), and a dock, which Lagerfeld took his final bow on. Models including Nora Attal, Kaia Gerber, and Adwoa Aboah paraded through the sand, barefoot and clutching various accessories — such as their shoes, which they slipped their feet into for their final lap around the boardwalk.
The front row was filled with familiar superstar faces, such as Pharrell Williams, his wife Helen Lasichanh, Pamela Anderson, and Poppy Delevingne. Caroline de Maigret, Ines de la Fressange, and Vanessa Paradis were also among the FROW guests.
Leggings are officially pants, according to Chanel. The designer sent out a handful of models sporting oversized, tweed blazers and button-down cardigans, worn with tight, black biker shorts and Spandex leggings.
The offering was punctuated with Chanel’s signature tweed dresses, blazers, and skirts, but there was plenty of resort wear to be found in the form of swimsuits, cropped cardigans, culottes, tank top dresses, and silk sarongs. The collection concluded with a line-up of the brand’s eveningwear, in a monochromatic color palette.
Reflecting the theme of the show, the accessories were playful and beach-inspired. There were straw baseball hats, PVC slides, and cross-body bags that took the form of beach balls and seashells. Belts and necklaces spelled out “Chanel”, while drop-down earrings read “CHA” down the left ear and “NEL” on the right.
