The 2020 virtual Emmy Awards’ dress code encouraged nominees to “come as you are, but make an effort.” Many instantly predicted that celebrities would be showing up in their finest PJs as a result, because, wouldn’t you if you were Zooming in from home? But this was very much not the case tonight: Instead, stars showed up in their finest evening attire. It became clear that even Hollywood A-listers miss the act of dressing up for a glitzy awards night, almost as much as we, the spectators, miss watching the step-and-repeat’s spectacle.

Highlights from some of the evening’s best-dressed included Zendaya, who wore a Christopher John Rogers dress with a shapely skirt. Regina King wowed in a blue Schiaparelli frock with a dramatic puffed shoulder and sent a message with a pink Schiaparelli suit with a t-shirt featuring Breonna Taylor. Reese Witherspoon proved the classic LBD never tires in Louis Vuitton, complete with pieces from the label’s High Jewelry collection. Shira Haas also wore a Chanel Haute Couture gown that took almost 1,200 hours of work, complete with the label’s fine jewelry pieces.

Meanwhile, Kerry Washington delivered not one, but two dresses: an Oscar de la Renta floral strapless gown, and a sequined, leopard print dress from Dolce & Gabbana. Tracee Ellis Ross wore a ruffled Alexandre Vauthier dress—with a mask to match.

There were, however, a few chic PJ looks thrown into the mix, too. Rachel Brosnahan wore a pink and blue PJ set from Christy Rilling that was about as dressy and chic as loungewear can be. Jameela Jamil also fused lounge and eveningwear into one look: she wore a Markarian dress overtop a cozy cami and pants set by JJwinks.

Below, more of the best fashion moments of the night.
