Dior Just Made Its Morocco Runway Debut in the Most Spectacular Way

Yesterday, Dior set Marrakesh’s fashion runway alight with its Cruise show. An outdoor runway at the magnificent El Badi Palace with dozens of floating tealights and bonfires created the perfect ambiance for the French label’s first-ever full-scale runway show in Morocco.

Envisioned by creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri, the runway showcased Dior’s Resort 2020 collection which features beaded and patterned dresses. Right after sunset, a diverse cast of models catwalked to the beats of Jajouka musicians, along with British electronic band The Orb.

With inclusivity, globalism, and exchange of cultures at the heart of the event, Dior’s signature motifs Toile de Jouy and ‘tarot cards’ reinterpreted as African wax prints took the center stage at the show. The wax patterns were designed by Uniwax, an Ivory Coast-based studio which is one of the last few to produce the traditional fabric with artisanal techniques.

Besides the patterns, the collection was punctuated with evening gowns, dresses studded with Murano glass beads, four bohemian-style white lace wedding dresses, a denim jumpsuit and jersey column dresses.

Through the show, Dior also paid homage to the late Yves Saint Laurent, the head of Christian Dior in late 1950s and 1960 who was inspired by North Africa throughout his career.

Among the 800 guests were celebrities, influencers, VIPs and editors of the fashion industry who flew in from across the globe for the occasion. Making an appearance at the star-studded show were actresses Jessica Alba, Shailene Woodley, Lupita Nyong’o and Diana Ross as well as sisters from the American pop-rock band Haim.
