Island Girl: Zuhair Murad Takes Style Notes from the Tropics for Spring 2019

For next season, Zuhair Murad has looked to the past. The Lebanese designer has taken 1950s America as a muse for his Spring 2019 collection, but added a tropical twist. Imagining an idyllic paradise somewhere between Hawaii and Polynesia, the label has fused playful prints with retro-inspired silhouettes.

Employing almost-tattoo-like tiki motifs, vibrant yet understated prints are cast against featherlight fabrics or encrusted on to graphic sequins. It’s an exotic departure from the label’s norm, but an exploration that is certainly one of the collection’s key takeaways. Elsewhere, Murad’s signature lacework, beaded dresses, and deconstructed blazers were dotted throughout, a belted, nonchalant two-piece clad in a purple-hued print a particular standout.

Color-wise, the collection swayed from a muted sea foam to a bold scarlet, with some stark monochromatic separates making for a minimalistic palate refresher. Hallmarks such as gossamer-thin capes were mixed in with Fifties-inspired tea dresses, and pared-back pants provided a tonic to lashings of lace and embellishments. Overall, Spring 2019 was a bold dissection of the Americas and beyond, introducing new techniques, prints, and silhouettes while also retaining the high-octane gowns beloved by Murad’s A-list clientele.
