This Emirati Label Takes Style Cues from the Concrete Jungle for Fall

According to Alicia Keys, it’s where dreams are made of – and New York has also helped construct one new collection this season. Twisted Roots has taken inspiration from the city’s iconic skyline for Fall 2018, reimagining the contemporary horizon in minimal lines cast across pared-back, louche silhouettes.

The Dubai-based label, a finalist in the 2017 DDFC/Vogue Fashion Prize, took note from three key elements of the Big Apple in the Framework Collection, each of which weave an urban magic on the line. Distinguishable, contrasting stitching pays tribute to that found on a baseball, while sculpted hemlines and overlapped edges nod to the Chrysler building, the Art Deco-style skyscraper that towers over Manhattan. Lastly, embroidery across sleeves or trailing down relaxed pants echo the city’s structure, while also resembling brickwork when viewed vertically. With a restrained color palette – just black, white, and a deep green appear throughout – fabrics are kept ethereally light to allow for delicate movement. Refined, long-line tunics are made for easy layering, while draped dresses deliver a timeless elegance.

The collection was inspired by Emirati-Danish designer and Twisted Roots founder Latifa Al Gurg‘s recent trip to New York, her travel memories subtly imbuing each piece. Modern, versatile, yet utterly timeless, every garment – all of which are, aptly, named after a NYC destination – is likely to prove a trans-seasonal staple for It-girls of the region.
