Celine by Hedi Slimane’s SS20 Collection Beckons the Bohemian Bourgeoisie

It’s been a year since Hedi Slimane presented his first collection for Celine, cementing a newfound aesthetic for the maison as the recently appointed creative director with a nostalgic yet modern approach in the long-anticipated Spring/Summer 2020 collection. Delving into the archives of Celine’s longstanding sartorial legacy, Celine by Hedi Slimane’s SS20 pieces are a nod to the label’s dominance of the 1970s bourgeoisie with an assembled approach to contemporary bohemian staples reminiscent of the je ne sais quoi chicness of an empowered Parisian woman.

Aptly described as Slimane’s travel notebook from Saint-Germain-des-Prés to Saint-Tropez, Celine by Hedi Slimane’s SS20 designs call to mind the Parisian bourgeoisie with her nonchalance or the bohemian bourgeoise in the south of France, with touches of tapestry weave, lamé, silk, paisley, and scarves worn around the head like turbans for an inspired reimagination of the iconic Seventies style.

Going back to basics and unearthing memorable elements from the brand’s Parisian roots, these relaxed retro fits are the epitome of a ready-to-wear collection that can be easily translated straight from the runway to the closet. Pleated silk dresses, collared blouses, and suede boots embody the timeless romance of a bygone era while manifestations of what can only be described as flower power decorate the simple silhouettes. Yet the true hero of the season is denim with big-buckled culottes, midi prairie skirts, and bootcut jeans paired with chasseur jackets, smocked tops, and houndstooth capes redefining functional femininity not only for the season but also the unforeseeable future.
