Luxury maison  Celine is pre-launching a new soft day bag June 5 and it is poised to see lovers of the French house’s accesories fall hard. When Celine artistic, creative, and image director Hedi Slimane created the original 16, it was intended as a reflection of the new Celine aesthetic and was swiftly elevated to the status of house signature.

The new 16 Soft is less structured with a soft hand. More casual in silhouette, the shape offers a shoulder carry, a very Parisienne way of wearing a bag. It will come in two leather options, a smooth calfskin (2,250 Euros) and a supple grained calfskin (2,000 Euros) in a range of warm, earthy hues. Both models feature the 16 cloche-clé with a new padlock enriched with a refined casing, a vertical leather band, and a round hand.  It will be initially available at select stores — Paris Montaigne, Paris Bon Marche, Milan Montenapoleone, New York Madison, New York SoHo, Los Angeles Beverly Hills, Tokyo Omotesando, Ginza G6 — and the Celine e-store.

The bag’s digit name is inspired by the Hotel Colbert, located at 16 rue Vivienne in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris. It was soon spotted on celebrities including Lady Gaga and Hailey Bieber. The 16 bag features 1960s accents reminiscent of Celine’s early bags, including the cropped flap and rounded and belted styles.

Throughout the ongoing pandemic and subsequent Black Lives Matter protests, the house of Celine has been swift to share its stance. Early this morning, it posted on its Instagram, “Celine stands against all forms of discrimination, oppression, and racism. Tomorrow’s world will not exist without equality for all.” This statement was followed with the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter. Meanwhile, throughout the pandemic, Slimane curated a selection of films from Mubi’s hallmarks of Hollywood to cult classics to watch free.
