How Tilda Swinton is Taking Big Suit Energy to the Next Level

First, there was Big Suit Energy, the oversized, structured way to do suiting, as decreed by Lady Gaga, Tracee Ellis Ross, and a cohort of power-dressing females dominating the best-dressed lists of late. Now, thanks to Tilda Swinton, Big Pants Energy is a viable moniker for what’s happening on the red carpet.

While standing alongside her Suspiria co-stars at the Hollywood premiere of Luca Guadagnino’s fantasy thriller, all eyes were on Swinton’s Schiaparelli trousers. Brighter in hue than a brand-new Stabilo highlighter and as voluminous as legs can go without being hazardous to the wearer, the pants packed A Punch. The 57-year-old balanced out the proportions of her lower half with a sharp round-neck jacket that was nipped in at the waist and embellished with gold hands in place of buttons. It toed the line between experimental couture tailoring and the wholly refined – a fitting choice for an actor who has built a career on putting her name to both independent arthouse films and blockbusters.

The London showcase of Suspiria was also indicative of this avant-garde yet restrained niche Swinton has carved out for herself. Where Dakota Fanning and Mia Goth wore ornate silver Gucci and Givenchy Couture gowns respectively, Swinton stood front and center in a black satin Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano suit. And that blood-red lip! It’s a formula we’ve seen countless times, but, as a seasoned professional, she knows that a bold lip color translates well for her on camera. Swinton, you see, has been honing precisely what makes BSE complete for years.
