“It Made Me Feel Like a Princess:” Priyanka Chopra Defends Her Marchesa Dress

It’s a label that had all but disappeared from the red carpet, following film producer Harvey Weinstein’s fall from grace. Marchesa, the womenswear brand helmed by Weinstein’s estranged wife, Georgina Chapman, was shunned by celebrities during awards season, as allegations of sexual abuse at the hands of the movie megalomaniac continued to swirled. However, this week, one of Chapman’s A-list friends boldly championed Marchesa in a stand of “women supporting women.”

Priyanka Chopra donned the New York-based label for her bridal shower on Sunday, turning up to the bash at Tiffany’s Blue Box Café in a romantic, white-feathered, strapless creation. And, last night, the Quantico star confirmed she purposefully chose Marchesa to support Chapman, who co-founded the brand with Keren Craig in 2004.

“Georgina’s a friend of mine, and she has been. And it’s not her fault. And I don’t think it is right to take it out on a self-made woman what somebody in her life did,’ Chopra told WWD. ‘That’s the wrong attitude. I’ve known her for years, and that was a beautiful gown, and deserved to be worn by a bride-to-be. And it made me feel like a princess. It was the right choice.”

Chapman, who announced last October that she would divorce her husband following numerous claims of rape, assault, and sexual harassment against him, saw her label absent from major red carpets after the #MeToo movement gained pace. However, Chopra isn’t the only star to rep the brand in recent months – Scarlett Johansson donned Marchesa for May’s Met Gala, the fist major red carpet the brand had been seen on since allegations against Weinstein surfaced.

Her bridal shower ensemble has led some fashion critics to suggest that Chopra could wear a Chapman design for her nuptials to her musician fiancé, Nick Jonas. The couple, who became betrothed on the Indian actor’s birthday in July after a whirlwind romance, are rumored to be tying the knot as soon as next month. The actress and the pop star are reportedly set to marry in Chopra’s home nation from November 30, in a three-day affair with 200 guests present.

While a location has not yet been confirmed, Jodhpur – the second largest city in Rajasthan – is home to the famed Umaid Bhavan Palace, where Liz Hurley wed Arun Nayyar back in 2007. Times of India also reports that the couple recently visited the city to finalize wedding arrangements, as well as visit friends, signaling the big day could be held in the imminent future.
