The Duchess of Cambridge Demonstrates How Royal Hair—and an Epic Tiara—is Done

When one thinks of the Duchess of Cambridge‘s beauty signature, a perfectly polished blowout—loose barrel curls or soft waves subtly swept to the side—instantly comes to mind. But for her latest look, the mother-of-three threw her hair up and back, serving a lesson in how great royal hair is really done, replete with jeweled headpiece and all.

Attending an annual white-tie reception hosted by Her Majesty at Buckingham Palace, which is held for diplomatic staff only, the Duchess wore the Lover’s Knot tiara for the occasion—a beloved and historic piece amongst the British royal family, as it once belonged to Princess Diana.

To further amplify the jeweled crown’s regal feel, Catherine chose a surprisingly simple updo that had just enough volume to serve as the perfect backdrop for the statement-making accessory. As the holiday season gets well underway, let this be a lesson to you: when opting for sparkle, be it a silver claw clip or ironic barrette, make like Kate and scale back the rest.

Earlier that day, the royal is attended a celebration for military families at Kensington Palace along with husband Prince William. For the occasion, she chose an all-over red tartan print to give her ensemble a thematic jolt—and the result was a surprisingly modern update to the classic kilt skirt.

The Duchess of Cambridge allowed her statement piece to be the focal point of the outfit, with a below-the-knee, plaid box skirt by New Zealand-born, London-based designer Emilia Wickstead. With its flattering pleating and slightly longer length, the style proved to be a refined twist on the traditional Scottish garment, as well as a departure from the royal’s usual love of solid-color outfits. She paired it with a simple, black buttoned-up cardigan by Brora, and accessorized with suede below-the-knee boots for a ultra-current spin (long skirts and knee-length boots is all the rage at the moment, with stars such as Victoria Beckham repeatedly wearing the look).

As the holiday party circuit continues for the royal family, expect the Duchess to churn out many more winning ensembles. One thing is for sure: she’s off to a strong start.
