Which 90s R&B Icon Did Beyoncé Pay Tribute to for Halloween?

Beyoncé doesn’t do anything by halves, and when it comes to Halloween, she goes all out. Over the years she’s done couple’s costumes with her husband Jay-Z, superhero shoutouts, movie references, and then some, but her best get-ups are the ones that pay homage to her favorite musicians. Janet Jackson, Salt n’ Papa, and Lil’ Kim have all gotten shoutouts from the superstar, but this year she took the concept one step further. In a pixie wig, jeans, and leather jacket, Beyoncé recreated the cover art for Toni Braxton’s debut album, sharing the image on Instagram with a side by side comparison and the cheeky caption, “Phoni Braxton.”

Released in 1993, Braxton’s LP is more than 20 years old, but the style she sports on the cover remains fresh: Even without the current ’90s revival, her simple white tank top, chain link belt, and oversize gold earrings would seem stylish. Beyoncé’s updated version doesn’t diverge from the original, and even though it’s meant as a costume, she manages to look chic. Good things happen when one diva celebrates another—take note feuding rap stars—and the dual images showcase the timeless appeal of denim and gold jewelry.
