The Modist Champions Body Positivity in Its Latest Shoot

The fashion world’s new found penchant for inclusivity is shaking up the industry. Following the Fall 2017 runways where designers sent out a diverse lineup of models of every age, ethnicity, and size, The Modist unveils its latest shoot for The Mod, which features the plus-size model Candice Huffine. The 33-year-old, who walked on the Prabal Gurung Fall 2017 catwalk during New York Fashion Week appears in a series of striking, black-and-white images shot by photography duo Julian Ungano and Tommy Agriodimas. Huffine isn’t the first plus-size model they have collaborated with.

The photoshoot images feature the American model wearing longer hemlines and looser silhouettes in the form of baggy separates, flared jumpsuits layered over turtlenecks, and flowy gowns topped with an artfully-secured turban. “Just because I have curves or cleavage or whatever it doesn’t mean that my own personal style wants to show that all the time,” Huffine says to Vogue.me. “This is the kind of style that speaks to me. I’m happy to know something like this exists” she adds, speaking about the recent rise of modest fashion.

A champion of size-inclusivity, the model has rolled out her own range of activewear titled Day/Won. The lineup features compression leggings, mesh crop tops, and for the more modest consumer, an easy-wear cardigan, all suited for each and every body type. “Often when a designer or a brand extends their sizing they completely change the collection, it’s not as trendy as their mainstream collection and the fabrics are different or selection is limited. I wanted to prove you can serve all women and I want to do it the right way,” Huffine reveals.

However, the barrier-breaking model is not a fan of the use “plus size” when referring to models who aren’t below a size 12. “In the past I understand why it existed, but why does it exist now? I think we can do away with it and I think we are getting closer and closer to that.” But she is hopeful. “I’m just very inspired by the women of our time now, it feels incredible to be a woman right now, it’s like we are on the verge of something, we all feel a little united and ignited.”
