Discover Ashi Couture Fall 2020 and Travel Far, Far Away From Planet Earth

Saudi couturier Ashi had heard about the Great Conjunction a few months ago. The rare celestial occurrence, whereby planets align in a certain way happens every twenty years, but last night’s alignment with Jupiter and Saturn so close together (only 730 million kilometers) hadn’t occurred since 1675 and won’t happen again until 2080. Yesterday was also Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year, due to the earth’s extreme tilt away from the sun. Whether this represented any shakeup for humanity in desperate search of a sign, none can be certain, however when Ashi—who stars alongside supermodel Cindy Bruna on this issue’s cover—decided to feature the first part of his Couture collection in a short film today via Instagram Live, one couldn’t help but feel a bit lighter and more hopeful.

“It is a message of hope,” affirms Ashi of his collection, adding that he will return to the official couture show schedule come January. “The collection is all-white representing the light of the moon.” And if, to the naked eye, our solar system’s planets merged into a “highly luminous” double planet, there is something to be said of fashion’s power when people unite. The three models showcasing beautiful diversity (one Asian model was unable to make it due to Covid-19 restrictions) appeared in nine looks set against an anthracite-colored moon and while each looked so ethereal individually, they stood firm and proud, when featured together.

Loose, effortless silhouettes in gazar, organza, and crepe imply a seductive lounge (à la Sherihan) and are juxtaposed against more tailored gowns and pantsuits. Beading trickles down the back of a dress’s cape and along its scalloped edges reminding of stardust, which almost pools at the feet dressed in silver paillette heels. “The light of the moon is a message of hope. The silence and unknown–it’s a poetic message,” says Ashi. Perhaps the most spectacular, the final all-black look, glistens and shimmers iridescently motioning the power of light. “I wanted to show something before the end of the year,” Ashi smiles, with just a hint of fatigue in his voice revealing the mammoth undergoing it was to bring to fruition such a collection when the earth is at a standstill. Not in vain, however, for nary a person who will not feel uplifted for having seen it. After all, what is couture if not the dream of another world, a lady’s greatest earthly escape…
