Amna Al Salem has the universe on her mind for Spring 2017. The Kuwaiti designer behind her eponymous label has tapped celestial shapes as a starting point. “I’m going through a fun period,” Al Salem tells Vogue Arabia. “I experimented with different lunar shapes and played with fabrics to create exciting movements,” she says.
The collection features a futuristic aesthetic with geometric outlines, like the tailored column dresses with a structured half-moon shaped tail that dramatically flares out on either side. Fluidity flourishes on a striped billowing dress suspended by thick cutout straps. Meanwhile, a bell-sleeve shift will find its way into an edited closet of go-to staples.
Al Salem was also particularly taken by mercury (the chemical element named after the fastest-moving planet in the solar system) for its quicksilver characteristic. The designer painted her new lineup with metallic accents, which take shape in the form of fingerless gloves and leg warmers.
