Former Fashion Prize nominee (2015), Moroccan Amine Bendriouich, was literally out of breath backstage after his debut Fashion Forward presentation. His state was understandable. Only moments before, Bendriouich was hopping and bumping to tribal music along with the models for almost the full length of his presentation. “It’s about freedom, honesty, and empowerment,” he stated of the collection, clearly satisfied with his energetic showcase. And satisfied he should be.
The unisex offering is a flirty, sporty, and unique collection of tightly edited hoodies, jackets, and carwash pleat skirts and pants. It’s a tough call to determine what is more beguiling: the cuts on fabrics sourced from Italy and handwoven in India, or the color. Here, Bendriouich uses one to highlight another. He draws emphasis to the lining of a baby blue vest by coloring it orange and he features embroideries in soft yellow against a pink background. As for decoration, clothes reveal ancient Berber symbols for good luck, fertility, and prosperity and sleeves are elongated with tufts to accentuate the playful Animalia side of the collection, entirely Made in Morocco.
These clothes are not for the wallflower, but for a free-spirited soul, the kind who won’t hesitate to take off her slippers and walk barefoot through soggy grass before performing an early morning sun salutation. A few minutes into watching models stomp around in a pastel rainbow of clothes, the observing crowd couldn’t help but smile, “This Bendriouich tribe does look fun.”
