There are few who can earn major style points in both professional and red carpet dressing, and Amal Clooney has long been one of them. While in the fashion world, she may now be known for her enviable red carpet style, her courtroom outfits have been just as noteworthy.
The Lebanese barrister’s successful career in international law and human rights (which began when she was Amal Alamuddin), led her to hone her sense of executive style. Sleek tailoring, shift dresses, pant and skirt suits, long coats, and stilettos have been a mainstay in her work wardrobe, but one would be mistaken to think that it’s void of bold shades. Clooney has never been shy of colors, and incorporates them generously in her outfits: from wearing a lilac coat to the hearing of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in 2011, to a striking yellow Bottega Veneta look at the United Nations in 2017. Besides yellow, Clooney has had a penchant for red, having worn nearly every shade of the powerful color—from bright to deep—via jumpsuits and dresses. Zac Posen and Proenza Schouler’s sophisticated designs also found a favorite in Clooney, alongside Stella McCartney‘s, who she looked to for the cream-colored two-piece for her civil wedding ceremony with George Clooney in 2014.
Marrying one of Hollywood’s most-loved actors and filmmakers meant stepping further into the limelight, and yet the attorney rarely wavered sartorially. Embracing her new life, Clooney extended her fashion sense to her public outfits, serving up power couple style in floor-grazing dresses and dazzling gowns next to George in suits. It was on date nights and vacations when she let her wardrobe’s playful side really show through, wearing everything from chevron-printed multicolor pants and a metallic gold mini dress in 2015 to a pink fringed number in 2019. On the red carpet and at other public events, Clooney’s outfits started to come from a branched-out group of designers, as well as couture archives. For her first Met Gala appearance in 2015, she wore a shiny red dress with ruffles by John Galliano for Maison Margiela, and made her return to the event in 2018 in a floral Richard Quinn number. With a love for vintage, some of Clooney’s best outfits including her maternity and post-baby dresses are courtesy of William Vintage, a high-end British name also favored by Meghan Markle. Its rare pieces from Madame Grès, Jean-Louis Scherrer, Versace, Chanel, and Yves Saint Laurent have been spotted on the mother-of-two on various occasions, contributing to her style icon status known today.
