Fresh trendsetters from Kaia Gerber and Selena Gomez to well-established style icons like Naomi Campbell have teased envious peeks at the next chapter in Alexander McQueen’s handbag collection, but it wasn’t until today December 5 that the rest of us could tote one ourselves. “The Story” is the first of three handbag lines debuted from the British designer’s spring/summer 2020 pre-collection and it’s already captured the attention of the sartorial world with its vintage silhouette and multifunctional practicality.

Redefining femininity with its contrast color lining and larger-than-mini size, the bag is available in a spectrum of hues including the classic black, khaki, and white as well as exotic orchid pink and lust red complementing the flora featured in the house’s ready-to-wear collection.

Recognizing the indecisiveness that often comes when selecting a style of handbag that suits both everyday ensembles and evening glam, the Story was designed to be carried in a variety of ways: hand-held with a delicate top-handle, across the body with a thick, detachable strap, or comfortably clutched through a modern rendition of the label’s timeless jewelry-inspired hardware.

Sharing stories is woven into the DNA of Alexander McQueen, with creative director Sarah Burton previously telling Vogue Arabia that the first step in creating a collection is determining the message they hope to express that season.

“It always starts with a story; a narrative – a world that I imagine the McQueen woman to inhabit each season,” said Burton. “Inspiration comes from everywhere: an exploratory trip, a book, a painting. We gather research from such diverse places. I then bring all of that into the studio and we surround ourselves with imagery and begin to work on who the woman is and what message we’re trying to express.”

This release comes fresh on the heels of an eventful few weeks for Alexander McQueen. After opening “Roses”, an exhibition displaying elaborate pieces centered around the flower at the London flagship boutique in late November, Burton was honored with the Trailblazer Award at the British Fashion Awards earlier this week for her “groundbreaking innovations and unparalleled craftsmanship”, according to British Vogue
