Having put her studio music on hold for Wicked, Ariana Grande is finally ready to meet the world as Glinda. The trailer for the long-awaited musical adaption of Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman’s Tony-winning 2003 Broadway show debuted during the Super Bowl on Sunday. The trailer for the musical sees Grande as the wide-eyed Glinda, the future Good Witch of the North, alongside green-skinned Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, who go through their unlikely friendship from school to adulthood.

Also spotted in the trailer are a few members of the star-studded cast, which includes Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero Tigelaar, Ethan Slater as Boq, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz, and Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, who can be seen telling Erivo’s Elphaba: “Try again, eyes shut, and picture it,” as she teaches her how to harness her powers. Fans of the musical will also spot the familiar tune of ‘Defying Gravity,’ the show’s signature anthem, as Elphaba leaps out of a high-tower window on her broomstick before telling Glinda, “I’m not afraid. It’s the Wizard who should be afraid of me.”

“This movie has everything: giant musical numbers, big action pieces, and using a classic story you all know, The Wizard of Oz,” director John M. Chu told the audience at CinemaCon 2023 in April, where the first-look footage was showcased. “At the end of the day, it’s actually not about those things. It’s about change and [how] it’s necessary for things to get better.” The first of Wicked‘s two-part adaptation will hit cinemas on November 27, 2024, while the second is scheduled for a late 2025 release.
