A musical on Umm Kulthum’s life is all set to make its Dubai debut soon. From May 3-5, the Dubai Opera will present Umm Kulthum & The Golden Era, which is originally a West End production. The play is in English while the music is in Arabic, and follows Dubai Opera’s showcasing of a digitized version of Kulthum’s concert through hologram technology.
The play, written by Saudi Arabian producer and filmmaker Mona Khashoggi, follows Kulthum’s journey to success. The musician, originally named Fatima Ebrahim Al-Sayyid Al Biltaji, was born in rural Egypt and went on to pave her way to become one of the world’s most prominent singers.
Kulthum’s songs are predominantly about love, longing, and loss, and have resonated with millions all over the world. The play chronicles the life of one of the East’s biggest stars, especially her struggles which entailed climbing to the top of a then-patriarchal society. The play will showcase some of her signature tracks such as ‘Alf Leila We Leila’, ‘Al Atlal’, ‘Fakarouni’ and ‘Enta Omari’.
The Dubai debut of the show will be a triumphant win for Khashoggi, who wrote the musical with the aim of going global. The producer’s other notable achievements include being a consultant to UK photographic institute Photo London and Jeddah’s Hafez Gallery.
Umm Kulthum & The Golden Era will play at the Dubai Opera from May 3-5 with shows starting at 8pm. Tickets can be purchased via Dubaiopera.com.
