History was made last night on February 9, when UAE became the first Arab nation and the fifth nation in the world to reach Mars. The Hope Probe‘s successful arrival on the red planet in the first-ever Arab interplanetary mission marks a major breakthrough for the region in the global space exploration race.

The president of the UAE, HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan felicitated the leaders, scientists, engineers, citizens, and residents of the UAE for the success of the Hope Probe’s arrival on the red planet. He said, “This historic achievement would not have been possible without the persistence and determination to implement the idea that emerged at the end of 2013 from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who followed it up closely until its success.”

Additionally, the president also extended his praises to HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, for dedicating the time, support, and effort in making this mission a success. He said, “Thanks to both leaders and the team of scientists and engineers behind the project for proving to the world that the UAE is capable of achieving the impossible.”

Lauding the success of this vital mission, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said, “The Hope Probe’s historic arrival at Mars is the greatest celebration of the 50th anniversary of our country. It sets the tone for the beginning of the next 50-year phase with boundless ambitions and dreams.” He added: “Our next accomplishments will be even bigger and greater.”

Since the Hope Probe has entered Mars’ orbit, it will transmit its first image of the planet back to Earth within a week’s time. The success of the UAE’s maiden mission to Mars did not come overnight. It took seven long years of hard work by a group of 200 Emirati engineers and members at partner institutes in the United States.
