The air was buzzing with excitement on the Côte d’Azur as guests arrived at the Carlton Beach Club for the 19th edition of the Trophée Chopard. Of note, the high jewelry maison has been sponsoring the festival for 25 years. The annual event, held during the Cannes Film Festival sees Academy Award winning actors–Julianne Moore, Charlize Theron, Helen Mirren–present a female and male up and coming actor with an award. The initiative of Chopard’s President Caroline Scheufele was inspired by her deep love for cinema. This year’s award’s Godmother, Julia Roberts, arrived for the photo call with her signature auburn hair pulled back and a chic Dior skirt suit and posed alongside Canadian director Xavier Dolan, who had filmed her Happy Hearts campaign. The star-studded guests then made their way to their seats for an haute cuisine dinner by chef Bruno Oger with lobster salad and a fish main–a culinary reminder that the dinner was feet away from the Mediterranean.
“Everyone get a picture and then you know what we’re going to do? We’re going to put our phones down,” said Roberts as she took to the stage to present the winners their awards. The crowd erupted into applause at the invitation to genuinely interact with the actor. “We’re going to remember this evening forever,” she said. Her impassioned speech spoke of the deep meaning she felt to support other actors–while jokingly telling the winners Jack Lowden and Sheila Atim, that that didn’t mean they could call her. “Oh, I will definitely be calling you,” replied Lowden speaking before the audience to laughs that lasted long through the night.
