Travis Kelce—Taylor Swift’s partner first, Kansas City Chiefs tight end second—just opened up about how he finally got the pop star’s attention. The public already knows, of course, that Kelce’s original plan to meet her was thwarted in July when security declined to let him backstage at the Arrowhead Stadium stop of Swift’s Eras Tour. There, he was planning to give her a Swiftie-style friendship bracelets emblazoned with his phone number. When that didn’t work, however, it seems someone from Swift’s inner circle intervened on his behalf.
“There were definitely people she knew that knew who I was, in her corner [who said]: ‘Yo! Did you know he was coming?’ I had somebody playing Cupid,” Kelce explained in an exclusive interview with WSJ. Magazine.
At the time, Kelce wasn’t aware of the anonymous endorsement, but he knew something had clearly changed when he got an unexpected text from Swift.
“She told me exactly what was going on and how I got lucky enough to get her to reach out,” he added.
It sounds like at least one person from Swift’s family had some hand in the machinations, though.
“She’ll probably hate me for saying this, but… when she came to Arrowhead, they gave her the big locker room as a dressing room, and her little cousins were taking pictures… in front of my locker,” the NFL star admitted.
Sadly, Travis Kelce declined to share much about his first meeting with Swift. He did, however, pat himself on the back for not letting nerves get in the way of their fun.
“When I met her in New York, we had already kind of been talking, so I knew we could have a nice dinner and, like, a conversation, and what goes from there will go from there,” he recalled.
The rest is history.
