Considered the best European destination at the latest World Travel Awards 2018, at the latest World Travel Awards 2018, there is no doubt that today, Lisbon is the most exciting and hyped city in the world. Bursting with centuries-old attractions, a delicious restaurant scene, and a burgeoning creative Christian Louboutin, and Monica Bellucci call Portugal’s vibrant capital home.

However, in a city so popular with tourists, finding peaceful, authentic, yet stylish accommodation can be a challenge. Fortunately, Lisbon houses some hidden gems, such as the Verride Palácio Santa Catarina. The 18-century palace, previously owned by a local count, was in dire need of renovation when it was recently acquired by Dutch first-time hoteliers.

Led by architect Teresa Nunes da Ponte and interior designer Andrea Previ, the restoration masterfully transformed the palace into a glorious, 18-room boutique hotel, combining sleek architecture and interior design with old-school Portuguese details such as blue and white, hand- painted azulejos, and original stucco work. Although most of the rooms are quietly stylish – inviting relaxation with a soothing color palette, natural textures, and marble bathrooms – the decorative extravaganza reaches new heights in the Queen’s and King’s suites. It is hard not to feel like royalty when embraced by the intricate wood paneling and customized de Gournay wall coverings.

Neighboring the Adamastor belvedere, Verride Palácio Santa Catarina benefits from its centric and high-altitude location, offering panoramic views of the Tagus river and Lisbon’s quaint orange terracotta roofs. This postcard backdrop can be enjoyed at the rooftop lounge, with breathtaking 360-degree views of the city, but also from its two unmissable restaurants. While Criatura’s formal fusion menu is inspired by Portugal’s maritime discoveries, gastro restaurant Suba offers tasty local cuisine with a fresh, contemporary twist.

Since you are in the trendy Chiado neighborhood, do like the lisboetas and explore the city by foot. After a five-minute walk, you can reach some of its most exceptional boutiques, such as Caza Velas do Loretto (the oldest candle shop in the world, operating since 1789) or A Vida Portuguesa, where you can find unique Bordallo Pinheiro ceramics, which make for the perfect city souvenir. Just remember, all of Lisbon is paved in cobblestones, so leave the high heels at home.
