Last week, Joli Malki appeared on television for the first time, taking to the stage of The Voice Finland to belt out a heartfelt rendition of Adele’s Million Years Ago during a blind audition in the first phase of the singing competition. Wearing a purple blouse, black trousers, and sneakers, the Syrian-born singer who fled to Sweden eight-years-ago amid the ongoing unrest, had all four of the judges turn their chairs around for her in less than a minute into the song.
Following the emotional performance, which left the judges and audience members in tears, the 20-year-old explained that the song was a tribute to her mother who passed away last year. Naturally, Malki’s rendition of Adele’s hit immediately went viral, moving a number of viewers who took to social media to praise the artist’s ability to beautifully convey her pain through singing. “The big difference between a singer who just hit the notes and another singer who sings his heart out 😥 she brought tears to my eyes,” wrote Lebanese singer Carole Samaha about the performance on Twitter. “That brought tears in my eyes! So powerful!” stated another user.
The immensely talented artist later took to her own Instagram page to thank those showing her support. “Thank you everyone for all the messages, comments, and support! I’m more than happy and excited to share things with you more and more! Love you all and stay tuned for more! Thank you once more!” she wrote.
