Dubai already holds the record of the world’s biggest shopping center, tallest building, and largest indoor theme park, and soon it’s going to be home to the biggest Chinatown in the Middle East.
Property developer Emaar announced this week that it will develop the region’s largest Chinatown within the retail district of Dubai Creek Harbor, which is a 10-minute drive from the Dubai International Airport and the Burj Khalifa. The announcement coincides with a three-day state visit of President Xi Jinping of China to the UAE this week — in fact, July 17 to 24 has been dubbed “UAE-China Week.” In honor of the Chinese president’s historic visit, several Dubai landmarks, such as the Burj Khalifa, Burj Al Arab, and Dubai Frame have lit up in red, a nod to China’s flag color. Meanwhile, mobile carriers du and etisalat changed their network names to read “WelcomePresChina.”
Occupying six square kilometers of space, and housing many brands from the East Asian nation, the new Chinatown is set to rival Dragonmart— Dubai’s premiere shopping destination for Chinese-related products. For now, no further details have been revealed about what to expect, however, if previous Emaar projects are any indication (The Dubai Mall, The Dubai Opera House, and the Burj Khalifa, to name a few), the hotly anticipated Chinatown will not disappoint.
