It’s not long until Taylor Swift releases her new album Midnights on October 21, and the singer has found a number of ways to keep fans on their toes. Through a fun series on her TikTok account, named ‘Midnights Mayhem With Me’, the 32-year-old has been gradually revealing the names on her tracklist of 13 songs, using a bingo cage nonetheless. “I know that I have a habit of dropping cryptic clues and Easter eggs when giving you information about my music, and I’m not here to deny that. But I am here to defy that,” she said in the first episode of the series on September 21. “I’m going to be using this technologically advanced device to help me allow fate to decide exactly what track titles I’m going to be announcing, and in what order.”
Since then, the artist has disclosed nine titles from the album via videos that see her dressed in coveted 70s-inspired outfits. They are, ‘Maroon,’ ‘Anti-Hero,’ ‘Midnight Rain,’ ‘Question…?,’ ‘Vigilante Shit,’ ‘Bejeweled,’ ‘Karma’, ‘Mastermind’, and ‘Lavender Haze’ which was revealed just last night. “Good evening and welcome to another episode of Midnights Mayhem With Me,” she says in the video. “I’m going to be announcing another track title from the Midnights album. We don’t really have that many left, so getting very exciting. The tension is palpable, what’s it going to be.”

After announcing that track one is called ‘Lavender Haze,’ Swift went on share more details about the song and what inspired it. “I happened upon the phrase when I was watching Mad Men,” she said. “I looked it up because I thought it sounded cool. It turns out it’s a common phrase used in the ’50s where they would describe being in love. If you in a ‘lavender haze,’ then that meant you were in that all-encompassing love glow. And I thought that was really beautiful.”

Swift added that while there is a sense of relatability in the song, it also comes from a personal place, presumably out of her relationship with longtime partner Joe Alwyn. “I guess, theoretically, when you’re in the ‘lavender haze,’ you’ll do anything to stay there. And not let people bring you down off of that cloud,” she says. “I think that a lot of people have to deal with this now, just just like ‘public figures,’ because we live in the era of social media, and if the world finds out if you’re in love with somebody they’re going to weigh in on it… Like my relationship for six years we’ve had to dodge weird rumors, tabloid stuff, and we just ignore it. So this is about the act of ignoring that stuff to protect the real stuff.”
