While Stranger Things may be coming to an end soon with its fifth and final season, fans can rest assured that Hawkins and the Upside Down are not going anywhere. Earlier this week, Netflix ordered an animated series set within the world of the show.

At this point, most details about the show are being kept under wraps and it might be a while before we hear anything substantial, but a statement from Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer revealed, “We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling.”

While the Duffer brothers will be executive producing this untitled project under their production banner Upside Down Pictures, they will also be joined by their past collaborators Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps. The series is being developed by Erib Robles of Random! Cartoons, Fanboy & Chum Chum, and Glitch Techs.

“We couldn’t be more blown away by what Eric Robles and his team have come up with – the scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you! The adventure continues…” read the announcement.

This is not the first expansion within the Stranger Things universe and both Netflix and the Duffer Brothers have made it apparent that they are not done with this highly successful franchise, given that the series is the most popular English language TV show on Netflix. In July 2022, Netflix announced plans for a live-action spinoff series and Stranger Things: The First Shadow – a stage show set in 1959 Hawkins which will open in late 2023 at London’s West End.
