At the Chanel Fall 2017 Couture show team Vogue Arabia caught up with Sofia Coppola, winner of best director at the Cannes Film Festival 2017, to discuss fashion, film, and beyond. The director sported head-to-toe Chanel, naturally, and spoke to Vogue about her time interning at Chanel in the Eighties and diversity in the film industry.
On Chanel
I worked as an intern at Chanel. It was incredible but scary at first. I was 15 years old and was a bit intimidated but Karl [Lagerfeld] was so nice. It was in the Eighties, I ran errands and it was thrilling to see a couture show… A cool time to be at Chanel. [Today’s show] The collection was really beautiful to see it in person. The fabrics, the feathers…
On Paris
I’ve always loved Paris. I came here a lot as a child because my parents use to come here. I find it really inspiring. Paris has a special place for me.
On Fashion in Film
When I was a kid I made T-shirts; it was never anything serious. I never studied fashion, so I appreciate when you see great artists making couture. Fashion is always something that I’ve been inspired by and something I think about. Now, I consider the characters in my films and what costumes they should wear. [When it comes to directing], men and women have different ways of looking at the world, different points of view. It’s good to have diversity in film. I learned everything from my father [Francis Ford Coppola].
Coppola’s award-winning film ‘The Beguiled’–starring Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, and Elle Fanning–premieres internationally on July 15th, 2017.
