In a recent change of policy, the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi will no longer offer visitors the option to rent abayas.

The Sheikh Zayed Mosque is not only one of the largest mosques in the world but it is often hailed as a stunning architectural marvel blending traditional Islamic architecture and contemporary design elements. The towering white marble domes and minarets of the mosque not only house thousands of worshippers every day but also welcome tourists from around the world. Visitors can marvel at intricate floral patterns, calligraphy, and geometric designs that adorn the mosque or get the opportunity to see one of the largest chandeliers in the world.

It is not uncommon for people visiting the mosque to be unaware of dressing etiquette within its premises – women should be covered with loose, non-transparent clothing and a headscarf while men should also observe a certain level of modesty. This is why the grand mosque previously offered a free-of-charge rental service for abayas so people could enter the mosque in a respectful manner even if they had come dressed inadequately.

However, according to reports, the mosque has recently requested that visitors should come prepared and dressed appropriately in line with modesty standards observed within its premises. For those that might still show up to its doors unprepared there is the option to buy an abaya for AED 45 from the shop.
