History was made on Saturday, March 30, when the horse belonging to the stable of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, won the Dubai World Cup for a record second time. Godolphin’s Thunder Snow, trained by Emirati handler Saeed Bin Suroor and ridden by jockey Christophe Soumillon became the first one to win the USD 12 million prize twice.

Since horses and equestrian events are of importance to HH Sheikh Mohammed, the royal family came together at the Meydan Racecourse for the world’s richest horse-racing event. HH Sheikh Mohammed was joined by his wife, HRH Princess Haya bint Al Hussein and their daughter Sheikha Al Jalila as well as Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. Also in attendance were HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance, HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, and a number of Sheikhs and senior officials.

Receiving the coveted cup from HH Sheikh Hamdan, HH Sheikh Mohammed said, “The source of my happiness is not the precious cup, or the cash prize, but seeing the happiness of the UAE people, the owners, trainers, jockeys and the fans who keep waiting for this special event year after year.”

HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces congratulated HH Sheikh Mohammed on the win in a tweet where he referred to him as his brother. The tweet said that this victory represented the continued success of the prestigious tournament and that the UAE will continue to love and support horse racing.
