The Global Teacher Prize event was held in Dubai on Sunday, March 24 to honor the profession of teaching. As the chief guest for the event, HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai awarded the prize to Tabichi after it was announced by Hollywood actor Hugh Jackman.

Sheikh Hamdan also congratulated the teacher on Twitter. “From Dubai, we congratulate the African continent for Global @TeacherPrize winner, Kenyan maths and science teacher @PeterTabichi. The lack of resources at his school was never an obstacle in the face of his creativity. We believe that teachers are the creators of needed change,” he wrote.

Tabichi, who is a 36-year-old teacher at Keriko Secondary School in Kenya’s Pwani Village is known to give away 80 percent of his earnings to the poor and for leaving employment at a private school in order to help the children in need. In his victory speech he said, “Every day in Africa we turn a new page and a new chapter. Today is another day. This prize does not recognize me but recognizes this great continent’s young people. I am only here because of what my students have achieved. This prize gives them a chance. It tells the world that they can do anything.”
