Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance Passes Away

Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Minister of Finance and Deputy Ruler of Dubai, has passed away at 75. A 10 day mourning has been announced in Dubai following his death. The UAE President has also declared that the UAE nationa flag must be flown at half-mast starting today and to be raised on Saturday, March 27 as a mark of respect. All work in government departments and institutions across Dubai will be suspended for three days starting Thursday, March 25 to Saturday, March 27.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid held the position of Minister of Finance since the first formation of the cabinet on December 9, 1971, making him the longest-serving UAE minister. He played an indispensable role in developing financial policies and government spending. The late Sheikh oversaw several high-level government entities such as Dubai Municipality, Al Maktoum Foundation, Dubai Aluminum (DUBAL), Dubai Natural Gas Company  Limited, Dubai World Trade Centre, and others.

Following the death of his brother, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, took to Twitter to say, “We belong to God and to Him we shall return. May God have mercy on you, my brother, my support, and my companion.”

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, paid tribute to his uncle on Twitter saying, “To God we belong and to Him we shall return. Today, our nation bid farewell to one of its knights who stepped down after a great journey of giving that will remain immortal, from which we draw inspiration and lessons in upholding our country and spreading goodness. We ask God Almighty to have mercy on Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum and grant him a place in the heavens.”
