Sharon Stone: “There’s a Giant Effort To Make Women Feel Oppressed. And I Don’t Go for It”

One of the boldest women of her era, Sharon Stone has built a loyal fanbase off of her striking on-screen roles and unapologetically strong opinions off-screen. In this month’s issue, the Hollywood icon takes over our cover in two striking looks: a sunshine yellow Dolce & Gabbana gown, and a royal blue Zuhair Murad number with cut-out detailing.

One look from Sharon Stone’s Instagram account that recently caught the world’s eye, however, was a snapshot of the now-64-year-old lounging by the pool in a bikini. The snapshot reiterated what most admire about Sharon Stone already—her fiery personality. During her special Zoom conversation with Syrian-American journalist Hala Gorani for Vogue Arabia’s September 2022 cover story, the actor found herself pondering a simple, yet loaded question: Why is it that she’s most often described using words like ‘bold’ and ‘brave’? In a candid moment, Stone replied: “Because I’m comfortable with myself, and I don’t feel personally oppressed. I think I can probably speak for you and the rest of the female planet when I say that there’s a giant effort to make us not feel free and to feel oppressed. And I don’t go for it.”

The words couldn’t be more true. Looking back at Sharon Stone’s life journey, it’s plain to see that this icon never backs down. Over the course of her 40 years in the industry, the actor has learnt several lessons, many of which she also shared with the world in her 2021 memoir, The Beauty of Living Twice. Her candid chapters highlight shocking experiences, including the time one director refused to shoot her scenes if she didn’t sit on his lap. Through it all, Stone has emerged as a symbol of unapologetic strength for women around the world, and without a doubt, for the women she shares an industry with.
