Shakira has opened up about her breakup with former Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué for the first time. In a televised interview with Enrique Acevedo of Canal Estrellas, the Colombian singer talks about finding strength after heartbreak and how she now believes that she will be fine on her own.
The couple had been together for eleven years before announcing their split in a joint statement last year in June. Despite requesting privacy for the well-being of their children – Sasha and Milan – the breakup ended up being highly publicized. “I am in the public eye, and because of that our separation is not like a normal separation,” Shakira said.
Her reaction does not come as a shock considering that speculations about the reason behind their breakup have been rampant with fans often pointing towards infidelity. In January when Piqué went Instagram official with his current partner, Clara Chia Marti, many people assumed that the two had been dating while the football star was still with his ex.
The heartache seems to be dissipating for Shakira as she says to have found strength in her independence and learned from her past relationships. The Grammy award-winning artist revealed that “I’ve always been very emotionally dependent – I have to confess this. I was in love with love,” before adding “One way or another, I’ve managed to learn it from another perspective and feel that I’ll be fine on my own.”
The singer claimed that she has not only found this strength for herself but also for her sons. “I feel complete — because I feel like I can depend on myself and I have two kids who depend on me,” she said before talking about how her newfound belief in herself is a direct result of the pain that she has suffered. “I have to be stronger than a lion. That strength, in order for it to be real and not a façade… it needs to be the result of great pain.”
